Annex A5: Resources Consumption

In this Annex the resources consumption during construction and operation of AUTOSHUTTLE is compared to the respective values of ordinary road traffic. Scenario: Line Duisburg-Köln (see Annex A10). The existing conventional motorway is maintained and AUTOSHUTTLE is constructed additionally. The most important construction materials are reusable: steel, iron, aluminium, copper, plastics. The non-reusable resource “energy” will be scrutinised:

Term Value Unit
a) AUTOSHUTTLE:
Operation period
50
years
Total traffic volume is
6,54E+10
vehicle km
energy consumption during operation
1,97E+09
l Diesel
energy consumption for the construction:
for manufacturing the equipment
3,40E+05
l Diesel
70 lorries 4 years à 40.000 km
3,36E+06
l Diesel
20 construction machines 4 years à 100 l diesel/day
2,92E+06
l Diesel
test runs: 6 months with averaged
10% of the commercial traffic volume
1,97E+06
l Diesel
sum:
1,97E+09
l Diesel

b) conventional car traffic:
energy consumption for the same traffic volume
as AUTOSHUTTLE
6,49E+09
l Diesel
(car 8,5 litres, lorry and bus 18 litres per 100 km)

Result: Energy consumption of AUTOSHUTTLE Duisburg-Köln is including constructing the line 30% of the energy consumption of the conventional road vehicle traffic it substitutes during its total operation period.
